With the average person spending about seven hours online daily, it is inevitable that businesses will move online as well. Starting a business has become considerably cheaper as the need for physical stores and all the attendant expenses have been eliminated. Hence, anyone can start and scale a business entirely over the internet.

However, the fact that there is very little barrier to entry to the online marketplace means that there is a proliferation of online businesses in practically every sector of the economy and industry. Industries such as healthcare, education, and hospitality that were initially thought immune to the digital wave have since developed functional business models for the internet.

With online business and ecommerce becoming increasingly difficult, it is necessary for anyone looking to start an ecommerce business to be aware of what it takes to start and scale an ecommerce business. This post will explore what ecommerce is all about, provide guidelines for aspiring ecommerce business owners, and explore the risks that ecommerce businesses must be aware of.

    What is ecommerce?

Simply put, online business is buying and selling that takes place over the internet. It means that a transaction was initiated, processed, and concluded entirely online. While some business models might involve booking a service online, ecommerce takes place entirely online. Ecommerce involves the transfer of money and information to make a transaction possible.

Ecommerce has evolved over the years and has become less cumbersome as ecommerce platforms grow and improve their processes. Consumers can easily discover products and services they need through the search engine optimization (SEO) and content marketing strategies that businesses adopt today.

Independent freelancers and small or large businesses can use ecommerce to break down the barriers to accessing any market and location and doing business on a large scale. Ecommerce can take different forms, including retail, wholesale, dropshipping, subscriptions, crowdfunding, physical and digital products, and even services. There are four major ecommerce models:

    • Business to consumer (B2C)
    • Business to business (B2B)
    • Consumer to business (C2B)
    • Consumer to consumer (C2C)

How to start an ecommerce business

While starting an ecommerce business is relatively simpler and easier than starting a regular business, it does not mean it is a walk in the park. Setting up an ecommerce business requires just as much intentionality as setting up a brick-and-mortar store, and avoiding some mistakes when starting a business will help to be successful. The following guideline will improve your chances of setting up a sustainable ecommerce store.

    Identify your offer

The first step you need to take to start an ecommerce business is to identify what you want to offer your customers. Do you have the skill or technical knowledge to sell or want to sell physical products? Answering this basic question will determine what your next steps would be.

If you choose to sell physical products, then you must choose what you want to sell. You need to understand that while you can sell practically anything online, not all products have the potential to scale your ecommerce business. You need to choose a product that solves a pain point for your target audience or at least appeals to some sentiment or emotion that they may have, whether it is a hobby or a passion. You can also choose a product based on your personal passion for a line of business or your personal experience in sourcing for a particular product. You should also research to find out what products fit current market trends or have a high-profit margin.

Once you determine this, you can then look for ways to find a supplier that will offer you the best value for money. Supply chain issues can kill any business and negatively impact your customer experience.

    Learn and research

You cannot just dive head-first into an ecommerce business. You need to learn the ropes and conduct thorough market research. Your research must, by necessity, cover market trends, consumer behavior, profitability, and risks associated with your product or service offering.

You also need to upskill as a business owner. Upskilling can involve taking online courses in your chosen niche. You can also get an online MBA degree to learn about the technical aspects of running a business.

You also need to research your competition so you know what you are up against and how you can create advantages for yourself.

    Create a brand

Today, the differences between a business and a brand are becoming more pronounced. While creating a business name and logo and other things matter, branding goes beyond this. As an ecommerce business, you need to create a strong brand and a compelling story around the business. Branding is about creating an identity for your business using the right messaging. Your core values, mission statements, and vision are all part of your brand.

Your brand is what makes you stand out from your competitors. There are thousands, if not millions, of ecommerce businesses offering the same products and services as you. Branding is what will make the consumer choose you over them.

    Choose an ecommerce platform

To start an ecommerce business, you can choose to buy a domain and build an ecommerce site from scratch or host your ecommerce business on one of the available ecommerce platforms. When choosing an ecommerce platform, you need to put the following things into consideration:

    • Pricing and profit-sharing system
    • Customization
    • Payment options
    • Support
    • Security

Create a marketing plan and shipping strategy

Beyond setting up your site, you need to have a strategy for marketing your business. Also, if you are selling physical products, you will need to have a strategy for shipping your products. You need to figure out where you want your products to reach.

Additionally, you must decide whether you want to do social commerce alongside ecommerce. What will your content marketing look like? Who will be in charge? You need to have these things in place both for the short term and long term.

    Launch and scale your business

Naturally, the next thing you have to do is to launch your ecommerce business and put the word out through whichever channels you have adopted as part of your marketing strategy. In the first few months of your ecommerce business, you need to focus on generating as much traffic as you can and then converting this traffic to profits.

Ecommerce businesses are becoming more and more popular, as people are moving away from traditional brick-and-mortar stores. If you’re thinking of starting your own ecommerce business, you should be able to create a successful ecommerce business if you follow the tips above.
